2008 Pedaling for Pets

When it comes to helping the animals, cold, rain, and mud was just not enough to stop the bicycle riders of the September 13 Pedaling for Pets Poker Run. Seventeen fearless participants joined the CSHS volunteers to brave the elements in an effort to raise funds for Carver-Scott Humane Society.

Riders began this journey at the American Legion in Chanhassen and rode through chilling rain to the Excelsior bike trail where they picked up their second poker card. After a brief water stop, bikers proceeded on the route towards Floyd's Bar in Victoria. Shortly after departure, the rain began to gain strength and winds became more intense. Riders forged on. Floyd's staff welcomed our soggy crew and promptly set them up with much needed "liquid encouragement" and food.

If we learned anything that day, it is that once Mother Nature has set her mind on something, she is insistent! Rain continued with more intensity. Trucks were dispatched to pick up defeated riders. But not all were discouraged. There were still seven riders determined to finish the 22 mile ride. (What were they thinking?)

The seven remaining riders jumped back on their mud covered bikes and started toward the Country Club Lanes in Tonka Bay. Finally, on the home stretch, riders raced to the High Timber Lounge in Chanhassen. Arriving at the final destination must have been a great relief! Festivities were already under way with over 50 supporters waiting to cheer on the remaining group. Towels were dispensed, fireplaces were started and the BBQ was fired up.

Raffles, food, drinks, and stories filled the rest of the evening. Amie Carlson was the Grand Prize Winner bringing in 4 aces and a 10 card. Congratulations to Amie and all of the riders who so graciously and cheerfully attended this year's Poker Run!

Riders encouraged CSHS volunteers to continue this event annually despite the uncooperative weather. The Pedaling for Pets Committee held a post run meeting and unanimously decided to try it again next year. Many thanks to our wonderful business sponsors and raffle prize donors who together with participants raised over $1200 for the animals! See you all in 2009 for the 2nd Annual Pedaling for Pets Poker Run!
