2009 Pedaling for Pets
Bikers were looking sharp on the August 29th second annual Pedaling for Pets Poker Run! Thirty eight fearless riders braved a chilly start from the Chanhassen American Legion. Determined to gain the best poker hand and raise funds for the animals, riders began the 22 mile journey sporting CSHS adoptable pet pictures on their backs.
Bikers set a feverish pace as they headed toward the Irish themed Jake O'Connor's in Excelsior, the first of five stops on the poker run. Well wishers and O'Connor staff welcomed riders to the sidewalk patio with much needed liquid encouragement! This inviting atmosphere was hard to leave but bikers forged on toward stop number two in Shorewood, Hazellewood Grill. Bikers enjoyed a variety of excellent and unique entrees and drinks, but the bliss would soon end as they scanned the route map to discover the next stop was over seven miles away!
Spasso in Minnetonka was the third stop for the bicyclists. The seven mile trek was well worth the ride with its beautiful restaurant and bar awaiting their arrival. Spasso offered an extensive wine list in addition to the fantastic entrees and pizza selection. This was truly an enjoyable stop for everyone but bikers were only half way home so they needed to continue on.
Clouds were rolling in and temperatures were falling as the riders began the journey back to Excelsior. It was a six mile ride back to Haskell's. Spirits lifted as they rounded the corner to Haskell's and the Lake Minnetonka patio view. Katie, the manager and her excellent staff soon had riders relaxed and enjoying refreshments. The riders were on the home stretch! Four short miles back to Chanhassen.
Reluctantly, riders left the comforts of Haskell's toward the High Timber Lounge for their final poker card and celebratory party. Exhaustion was clearly written on many faces as they approached the Country Inn Suites. Smiles soon replaced exhaustion with raffles and prizes in full swing. Riders and party goers won "lots of loot" including various gift certificates and family fun games from local business sponsors.
The best poker hand was turned in by Terri McDonald with a straight flush. Congratulations Terri! Shelly Silvernail raised the most funds for her adoptable pet which won her a George Foreman grill. Way to go Shelly!
Over $1500 was raised for the CSHS. Thank you to everyone for making the 2009 Pedaling for Pets a huge success and great time! A special thank you to the Country Inn Suites of Chanhassen for their endless support and fantastic hospitality, the staff was absolutely wonderful!
